The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that the Wall Street hype machine is in overdrive ahead of Friday's scheduled launch of trading in Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) on Nasdaq. The Globe's Andrew Willis writes lead underwriter Goldman Sachs filled the lobby of its Lower Manhattan headquarters with model rockets. Bank of America lit up the spire above its midtown New York office to look like a rocket blasting off. Analysts at banks working for SpaceX are making bullish forecasts on the company's growth potential, something that was severely curtailed during the dotcom era. An unusually large portion of the SpaceX debut -- 30 per cent of the stock -- is being earmarked for individual shareholders. In most initial public offerings, bankers allocate the bulk of stock to institutional funds. The banks are attempting to take advantage of Elon Musk's larger-than-life brand, and his cult following among individual investors who devour what he posts on X, the social-media platform he owns. Mr. Musk controls the company through multiple voting shares and the company's governance rules don't allow the board to fire him. Under Mr. Musk's leadership, an explosion is just as likely as a safe landing.
