Globe says TransAlta, rival hear power prices falling

The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that a C.D. Howe Institute study shows electricity prices have decreased in most Canadian provinces despite concerns over rising demand from electric vehicles, data centres and population growth. The Globe's Matthew McClearn writes that between 2018 and 2023, prices fell in six of the nine provinces analyzed after adjusting for inflation and electricity system costs. Power prices across North America often face a narrative of surging costs, but recent findings from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory indicate that U.S. national retail electricity prices have largely followed inflation. However, a few states, such as California and Hawaii, have seen rate increases. Canada West Foundation's Charles De Land notes that Alberta's power prices have fallen dramatically since 2023, as new renewable and gas generation started up in response to the earlier high prices. One reason for the price declines observed in most other provinces was that power demand grew modestly over the study's five-year period. Although the Canadian economy grew over the period, much of that was attributed to sectors that are less energy-intensive, such as the service and digital sectors.
