New York spot gold rose $9.70 to $1,766.50 on Friday. The TSX-V moved higher, adding 10.63 points to 646.04 while the TSX gold index added 1.23 points to 238.62. Most Canadian-listed gold miners edged higher today. Barrick Gold Corp (ABX) added 15 cents to $20.18 on 6.05 million shares while Novagold Resources Inc. (NG) rose eight cents to $6.24 on 205,000 shares.
Both companies had news today -- the same news -- from their shared Donlin gold project in Alaska. New drilling assays revealed today ranged as high as 14.63 grams of gold per tonne over 52.27 metres, a hit aided by a 13.94-metre interval averaging 33.95 grams of gold per tonne. Mark Bristow, Barrick's president and chief executive officer, applauded the growing understanding and support for the modelling concepts at Donlin, while Greg Lang, Novagold's president and CEO, deemed the latest assays "extremely exciting, not to mention rewarding." For investors, it was more ho-hum: Donlin already hosts a reserve of nearly 34 million ounces of gold at 2.09 grams per tonne.
