Project builds on CIBC's continued investment in modern, scalable payment solutions
TORONTO, Sept. 29, 2026 /CNW/ -- Today, CIBC (CM: TSX and NYSE) announced it will join Project Agorá, a global public-private initiative to test the use of new technology and tokenization for wholesale cross-border payments.
Convened by the Bank for International Settlements and the Institute of International Finance, Project Agorá brings together public- and private-sector participants to test the use of tokenization and programmability in international payments. CIBC aims to contribute to the project's next phase, building on successful real-value testing conducted in July 2026.
The project is seeking to establish a shared platform for tokenized commercial bank deposits and central bank reserves to support atomic (simultaneous) settlement of wholesale transactions in multiple currencies. The initiative aligns with CIBC's focus on modernizing financial infrastructure and exploring practical ways to improve the speed, efficiency, and certainty of institutional payments.
"We are excited to bring CIBC's payments and digital assets expertise to Project Agorá and work with partners from around the world to help shape the future of cross-border payments," said Giorgia Anton, Managing Director and Head, Payments, CIBC Capital Markets. "This global initiative is an opportunity to explore practical solutions that could make international transactions faster, more efficient, and more predictable, delivering greater speed, efficiency, and certainty for clients."
CIBC's participation in Project Agorá builds on its broader track record of payments innovation, which includes CIBC's Dynamic Currency Conversion product, enabling local banks to offer international cardholders the ability to complete ATM transactions in their home currency using real-time foreign exchange rates. Available throughout the world, the platform reflects the bank's continued investment in scalable payment solutions that make moving money simpler and more efficient.
More information on Project Agorá is available on the Institute of International Finance website.
