A New York Times dispatch to The Globe reports that on one side are companies like Anthropic and Microsoft-backed OpenAI, which argue that AI models are too dangerous and should be tightly controlled for safety. On the other side, tech giants like Microsoft and Nvidia advocate for open-source AI models to encourage further technological development. Nvidia chief executive officer Jensen Huang says that both closed and open models are needed for AI, while Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella emphasizes the importance of open-source software for a healthy AI ecosystem. Both joined other executives from Meta, Palantir and IBM in signing a supporting letter for open source. OpenAI and Anthropic have lobbied U.S. regulators about concerns over Chinese open-source AI models. The escalating fight stems from China's rapid progress in open-source AI models. In recent weeks, two Chinese AI start-ups, Z.ai and Moonshot AI, have released models that rival those from Anthropic and other American labs.
