The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that the United States urged G20 members on Tuesday to adopt a hands-off stance on artificial intelligence regulation during a meeting of industry leaders and commerce ministers in North Carolina. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe reports that the U.S. goals align with major American AI companies, which seek less global regulation to benefit their growing businesses. They fear federal requirements could harm profits by delaying new models or necessitating changes to products for security concerns. Tech adviser Michael Kratsios urged countries to adopt the "Carolina Principles," which focus on creating rules for "novel" AI situations instead of drafting brand new regulations, during his speech to G20 officials. He said,"Policy-makers do not need to approach each innovation in isolation and should not treat every emerging technology as a first-of-its-kind policy problem." Google DeepMind's Demis Hassabis called on the G20 officials to set up safety tests for AI systems. Meta's Mark Zuckerberg said countries should not restrict open-weight AI models. SpaceX's Elon Musk criticized the European Union's tech regulations, saying that the EU's policy "inhibits progress."
