The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that Air Canada's plan to co-ordinate with United Airlines on 10 cross-border routes would lead to higher prices for travellers, the Competition Bureau said in a report to the Minister of Transport released on Wednesday. The Globe's Eric Atkins writes that the two airlines have a long-standing co-operation arrangement, collaborating on prices, schedules, capacity and revenue-sharing on several routes. However, the airlines' recent proposal in June to expand the arrangement violates their 2012 antitrust agreement that restricts co-ordination on the routes, the bureau said. The proposed routes would link Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa and Vancouver with Chicago, Cleveland, Denver, Houston, New York, San Francisco and Washington. Air Canada said the partnership with United has allowed Canadian travellers to reach more destinations. The watchdog said it conducted a new assessment of the routes and concluded the airlines' co-operation "would lead to material anti-competitive effects, including price increases resulting in millions of dollars in consumer harm annually. ... The proposed arrangement would create or reinforce monopoly or near-monopoly conditions on several routes."
