The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday edition that Ottawa rejected a last-minute demand from the Trump administration to remove requirements for United States streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon to promote Canadian film, TV and music. The Globe's Marie Woolf writes that on Friday evening, U.S. negotiators unexpectedly demanded that Canada exempt its laws requiring U.S. streamers to enhance the discoverability of Canadian and French-language content. Canada rejected the demand made before talks ended, viewing it as a threat to its culture and sovereignty. This added to Ottawa's move to leave the negotiating table. During Friday night talks, U.S. negotiators presented a new draft of a trade deal with Canada, including requests for concessions on Canadian content discoverability. Although the Washington negotiators were not specific about which legislative requirements they objected to, they were insistent that changes be made to Canadian cultural policy in favour of U.S. streaming platforms. Senator Andrew Cardozo said: "There are some red lines we can't cross and I am proud the government stood firm. ... There are no guardrails in Trump's world and we have to define and redefine what those guardrails are."
