The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, Sept. 24, edition that Wall Street loves Meta's Muse, available so far only in the United States and Canada. The Globe's guest columnist Vass Bednar writes that Meta stock has surged 20 per cent since the launch of its artificial intelligence personal assistant. Muse was behind the Nasdaq index's 2.26 per cent rise to a record close on Monday. Shopify has announced that it would use Meta's Muse for agentic checkout, effectively embracing agents as legitimate on-line shoppers. Twelve days after the launch, Amazon blocked Meta's agent due to security, privacy concerns, and violations of its Conditions of Use, while also promoting its own shopping agents and relying on ad visibility. After all, bots don't click on ads. On Tuesday, major banks warned that agentic commerce creates unresolved problems around fraud, mistaken purchases, privacy, and who bears responsibility when the bot gets something wrong. In turn, some retailers are rewriting their terms of service so that the customer carries the cost of the agent's mistakes. So now, a software program's error is our problem. Mr. Bednar says we should regulate these agents before they go rogue and write the rules themselves.
