The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, Aug. 15, edition that Fairfax Financial Holdings has completely exited its 16-year relationship with BlackBerry, as revealed in a recent U.S. regulatory filing. The Globe's Sean Silcoff writes that Fairfax no longer owns any BlackBerry stock, having sold its last shares after holding 46.7 million for 11 years. The decision comes as BlackBerry's car software business gains renewed interest from investors. Fairfax chief executive officer Prem Watsa declined to comment. Fairfax, a major BlackBerry investor with 8 per cent of the stock in early 2025, chose not to convert its debt into equity, opting to roll over part of the debt until it was fully repaid in 2024. Fairfax earned about $200-million in interest over 10 years while holding $500-million of BlackBerry debentures, Mr. Watsa said in his annual letter to his shareholders published in 2024 (all figures U.S.). Fairfax has significantly lost on its BlackBerry stock, buying 46.7 million shares at an average of $17.16 each for about $882-million. Aside from a brief spike in 2021 due to meme stock speculation, BlackBerry shares have not approached that average price since 2012.
