The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that Anil Tahiliani at Matco Financial Inc. in Calgary, recently bought BlackBerry shares (last, $10.61). The Globe's Brenda Bouw writes that BlackBerry, once the world's largest smart phone player, and now secure-software provider, "is a stock we bought last month at around $12 a share," Mr. Tahiliani. "The Waterloo company isn't followed as closely these days as it was when it was a mobile phone maker and investors got burned on the stock. Some fund managers have never looked at the name again, focusing instead on other tech companies. But we see a real opportunity for BlackBerry now that it has converted from a hardware company into a pure software company. For example, its software is in 275 million vehicles worldwide [for digital dashboards, safety systems and autonomous driving technology]. Its software is also being used in medical devices, robotics and industrial machinery. The company reported double-digit revenue and earnings growth in the past couple of quarters and we're expecting the same growth in revenue and earnings over the next year. The company also has a secure communications division used by banks, defence companies and governments worldwide."
