Globe says Cameco doing well by PM's India visit

2026-03-05 05:00 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that Prime Minister Mark Carney's visit to India capped mounting efforts to recalibrate bilateral relations. The Globe's guest columnist Sanjay Ruparelia writes that a large delegation of cabinet ministers and business executives aimed to seize economic opportunities and deepen strategic ties, hoping to finalize a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement within a year. The $2.6-billion agreement for Canadian uranium supply to India's civil nuclear industry highlights the energy sector's significance as an export market for Canada. Despite increases in solar and wind investments, India still relies on coal for three-quarters of its electricity generation. The prospects of a comprehensive economic deal between Ottawa and New Delhi are promising. The current bilateral trade, mainly consisting of food and mineral oil exports to India and pharmaceuticals and machinery to Canada, supports this. As well, both countries have a strong incentive to enhance their leverage against the U.S. Canada remains far more dependent on the U.S. market than India. Yet India's dramatic shift regarding trade agreements shapes the prospects of a deal with Canada to a greater extent.
