The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, Nov. 7, edition that Cineplex plans to continue adding a fee to some on-line ticket purchases but will change how it communicates this charge to consumers. A Canadian Press dispatch to The Globe reports that this adjustment follows a $38.9-million penalty from the Competition Tribunal for alleged deceptive marketing related to on-line booking fees. Chief executive officer Ellis Jacob says: "They were not really questioning the absolute fee. What they were questioning is how it was on the website. It was all about the presentation and they've asked us to make some modifications which we are co-operating with them [on] and moving forward." He expects the modifications to be complete by early next year. They will make it more obvious to customers that Cineplex has been charging a $1.50 on-line booking fee since June, 2022, to customers not enrolled in its CineClub subscription and Scene Plus loyalty programs, which see the fee waived and dropped to $1. The Competition Bureau initiated a dispute with Cineplex, arguing that on-line ticket purchases mislead customers by not immediately displaying the full price. Cineplex disagrees and is appealing the penalty.
