The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, Jan. 30, edition that President Donald Trump said on Thursday he intends to announce his pick to replace Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell next week. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe reports that in the search for Mr. Powell's successor, the President has been seen to favour different candidates. The candidates to take the reins from Mr. Powell all agree with Mr. Trump that rates should be lower -- indeed, that was one of the President's explicit criteria for his pick. BlackRock chief investment officer Rick Rieder is favoured to be Mr. Trump's nominee. With no prior government or Fed experience, he could bring a fresh perspective to an institution the President views as politically biased. Former Fed governor Kevin Warsh is also seen as a contender for the job. Mr. Trump almost picked Mr. Warsh in 2018 for the top Fed job, but chose Mr. Powell instead. Fed governor Christopher Waller, one of two policy-makers who dissented this week in the central bank's decision to keep rates unchanged, is also in the running. He was the first Fed policy-maker to make the economic case for lower rates, saying that tariffs would not cause inflation.
