The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, April 23, edition that Citibank Canada chief executive officer Raymond Gatcliffe urges Ottawa to expedite approvals and lower regulatory barriers to support business growth and competitiveness amid changing global partnerships. The Globe's Stefanie Marotta writes that the federal government aims to fast-track infrastructure projects and boost economic development, but business leaders warn that progress is too slow. Mr. Gatcliffe says Canada has about two years to seize a "once in a generation opportunity." He says the traditional global rules-based order has given way, and now every country must do what it has to do. He says multilateral systems and trade deals have "been disrupted, and therefore, governments have to recognize that and do what is necessary to win in this period where those things have receded." Mr. Gatcliffe says "For start-ups to win and for larger companies to win and really compete, you need to have the benefit of a regulatory environment that is going to make way, approval mechanisms that are going to be quick, the commitment of capital from the government to step in and really to boost the opportunity that Canada has."
