The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, June 18, edition that The United States Federal Reserve kept interest rates steady as Kevin Warsh chaired his first meeting, with officials preparing for higher borrowing costs amid inflation concerns. A New York Times dispatch to The Globe reports that the decision to keep rates at 3.5 to 3.75 per cent for a fourth consecutive meeting was unanimously supported by all 12 members of the Federal Open Market Committee, marking the first unanimous vote since June of last year. The consensus among officials masks the challenges Mr. Warsh faces as he leads the Fed. Chosen by President Donald Trump, who has pressured the Fed for lower borrowing costs, Mr. Warsh has a tough position to navigate. Delivering lower rates has become nearly impossible due to the Iran war and resulting inflation. A tentative deal to end the conflict exists, but the economic impact is likely to last longer. Asked about the Fed's decision, Mr. Trump told reporters Wednesday: "It's all right, whatever." Later, when asked about the prospect of a rate increase soon, he said: "It could happen. It's hard to believe. It just keeps our country down. It's so unusual."
