The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday, March 31, edition that Cuba is set to receive its first oil delivery of the year from a sanctioned Russian tanker carrying about 730,000 barrels. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe reports that this comes after President Donald Trump expressed no issue with the tanker providing support to Cuba amid a United States oil blockade. Conflicting reports emerged about the Russian-flagged Anatoly Kolodkin. The Russian Transport Ministry claimed it had arrived, while state television reported it was sailing north of Cuba toward Matanzas and would arrive in a few hours. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Monday that Russia had previously discussed its oil shipment to Cuba with the U.S. The tanker's final destination is the port of Matanzas. Experts say the shipment could produce about 180,000 barrels of diesel, enough to feed Cuba's daily demand for nine or 10 days. Asked about Mr. Trump's decision to allow the Russian oil tanker and not ones from other nations, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt called it "a decision that will continue to be made on a case-by-case basis for humanitarian reasons or otherwise," adding that "there's been no firm change in our sanctions policy."
