The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that on Friday the United States military reported firing on a merchant vessel attempting to breach its blockade of Iranian ports, while Iran targeted U.S. positions in the Persian Gulf. An Associated Press dispatch to The Globe reports that the U.S. and Iran continued their conflict after a 13th night of strikes, with both sides hinting at possible escalation. Saudi Arabia targeted the port city of Hodeida in Yemen in response to Iranian-backed Houthi attacks on Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea. The Houthis threatened to escalate tensions, ending a year-long calm. On Friday, President Trump called negotiations with Iran "the most serious we've seen" despite ongoing daily strikes, adding that he's "not in a hurry" to end the war. Vowing that Iran "will not bow to U.S." bullying, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that the Islamic Republic is "neither intimidated by threats nor will we yield to pressure." The Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global energy supplies, has been effectively closed due to Iranian attacks, leading to soaring fuel prices and economic turmoil. Both Bahrain and Jordan said they had intercepted aerial attacks by Iran on Friday.
