The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that oil sands producers that have struggled with tight export pipeline capacity now face the prospect of spending billions of dollars to boost production if the West Coast pipeline gets built. The Globe's Emma Graney and Jeffrey Jones write that Big Oil will be forced to weigh the costs of new projects to increase production against the impact on their balance sheets. Those sheets, in recent years, have been strengthened with high crude prices. Ottawa bestowed its national interest listing on the newly renamed Pacific Link pipeline on Thursday, making construction more likely. But other proposals to increase pipeline capacity have emerged over the past 12 months, offering increases in shipments to the coast, as well as markets in the United States. Combined, those projects would allow an extra 940,000 barrels of oil a day. They include South Bow's proposed Prairie Connector, and capacity expansions on the Trans Mountain and Enbridge Mainline systems. Add Pacific Link, and that's close to two million extra barrels a day to fill all of the conduits. As for demand, wild cards include how quickly Middle East production recovers and U.S. energy policy post-Donald Trump.
