The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that major employers are urging Ottawa to pass legislation that would complicate strike actions for workers in federally regulated industries, claiming that frequent work stoppages in ports, airlines and railways are harming Canada's reputation as a trading partner. The Globe's Vanmala Subramaniam writes that in the past month, Canadian National Railway and the Railway Association of Canada have discussed with Employment and Social Development Canada potential changes to the Canada Labour Code concerning strikes and lockouts. Calls have occurred during a tripartite consultation with the federal government and unions to reassess and potentially revise Canada's collective bargaining process. On April 17, ESDC released a consultation document that laid out details of the plan, and it has sought feedback from employers and unions. The consultation period ends May 25. Before the consultation, employers and industry groups pressured the government for changes to the CLC, which applies only to federally regulated industry workers. The RAC said the government needs "more effective tools to protect the national interest and avoid damaging disruptions to supply chains."
