The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday, Oct. 20, edition that Raymond James analyst Steve Hansen has lowered his recommendation for Canadian National Railway to "market perform" from "outperform." The Globe's David Leeder writes in the Eye On Equities column that Mr. Hansen gave his share target a $5 trim to $195. Analysts on average target the shares at $194.55. Mr. Hansen says in a note: "CN enters Q4 against tougher consolidated comps, with two of its strongest Q3 growth engines, grain and automotive, showing signs of moderation, while intermodal and forestry remain weak. CPKC, meanwhile, faces a more favourable grain comparison and is seeing support from intermodal, metmin, improving coal and potentially recovering automotive volumes. Importantly, the first two weeks of [the fourth quarter reinforce this divergence, with CN RTMs declining 4.7 per cent year-over-year versus CPKC growth of up 1.2 per cent, as broader weakness across CN's merchandise franchise contrasts with resilient CPKC intermodal, potash and metmin volumes." The Globe reported on April 23 and July 16 that Mr. Hansen was maintaining his "outperform" call for CN, which could then be had for $156.23 and $180.16.
