The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that a new report indicates Canada's success in selling oil to markets beyond the United States has been significant, highlighting the need for more pipelines to coastal waters. A Canadian Press dispatch to The Globe quotes think tank MEI saying that the average price gap between light U.S. and heavy Alberta crude blends narrowed by 37.5 per cent between the 18-month lead-up to the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion's completion in 2024 and the 18 months that followed. It says that resulted in a $16.7-billion (U.S.) lift to industry revenues between June, 2024, and November, 2025. Before the Trans Mountain expansion began, non-U.S. Canadian oil exports accounted for only 3 per cent of total exports, but that proportion grew to 14 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2025. The report comes as Alberta prepares a regulatory application for a new pipeline across Northern British Columbia that would allow up to one million barrels of oil sands crude to be exported to Asia. A broad energy agreement signed between the Alberta and federal governments late last year outlined conditions for advancing such a project, although no private-sector company has yet taken the lead.
