The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday, Sept. 1, edition that U.S.President Donald Trump threatened further strikes against Iran after direct attacks intensified tensions in a conflict that had recently become an economic standoff.
A Reuters dispatch to The Globe reports that Iran fired missiles at United States air bases in Jordan, retaliating for a U.S. strike on Larak Island targeting Iranian launchers in the Strait of Hormuz.
Washington has so far mainly held off from hitting Iran's major oil and gas infrastructure, a move that Iran says would be met with devastating attacks against its Gulf neighbours.
Washington has increased efforts to impose "secondary sanctions" on third countries purchasing Iranian oil.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Iran is "lashing out" due to the economic impact of new sanctions.
Mr. Bessent said: "They're in shock at the state of their economy. I would think that they are lashing out kinetically because they are losing economically."
Mr. Bessent on Sunday said secondary sanctions were likely to be unveiled weekly in the effort to put pressure on Iran, with an initial focus on banks.
