The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that DHL Express suspended operations across Canada due to a labour dispute and a new federal law banning replacement workers during strikes. The Globe's Vanmala Subramaniam writes that about 2,100 workers represented by Unifor have been on strike since June 8 after being locked out amid stalled contract negotiations. The union has been seeking a new contract since October, 2024. DHL had been using replacement workers to keep operations running across its warehouses in Ontario, British Columbia and Quebec since the strike began. However, new federal legislation that effectively bans employers from using "scabs" or replacement workers during strikes came into effect at midnight on June 20. DHL spokesman Pamela Duque Rai says DHL had begun sourcing temporary labour since early May as a contingency plan, when 97 per cent of Unifor members voted in favour of striking. DHL put these workers to use at various sites across the country after the strike began, but stopped using them before Friday at midnight, the company said. The legislation banning replacement workers, Bill C-58, was passed in late 2023, received royal assent in June, 2024, and took effect on Friday.
