The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that Alberta's oil sands have transformed Canada's economy, and this prosperity should be leveraged during the global energy crisis, said Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson at the Global Energy Show in Calgary on Tuesday. The Globe's Emma Graney and Matthew Scace write that it was a stark display of how much the Liberal government has shifted its position toward the oil and gas sector under Prime Minister Mark Carney. Mr. Hodgson emphasized support for the oil and gas sector, saying countries thriving in the evolving energy market will be those that can supply products with lower emissions. He noted the importance of reducing greenhouse gases from fuel production, saying the oil sands should advance the Pathways Alliance carbon-capture project in Northern Alberta. However, Cenovus Energy chief executive officer Jon McKenzie called Pathways "a project with no revenue" at the conference on Tuesday. He said Pathways "is simply another cost burden that will be borne by industry and the two levels of government." Mr. Carney has been unequivocal that a new oil pipeline from Alberta to the West Coast would be conditional on the construction of the Pathways project.
