The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday, July 21, edition that Enbridge has begun construction on a $4-billion expansion of its natural gas pipeline system in British Columbia. The Globe's Brent Jang writes that Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson celebrated this milestone at a ceremony in Prince George, on the land of the Lheidli T'enneh First Nation. "Investment is flowing and Canada is building again," Mr. Hodgson said. In April, Ottawa approved the Sunrise expansion program, which will upgrade Enbridge's T-South system infrastructure, increasing capacity by 17 per cent in Southern B.C. and enhancing supply to the U.S. Pacific Northwest. Westcoast Energy Limited Partnership, an affiliate of Enbridge, operates that B.C. transmission network for natural gas. "This is how we strengthen Canadian energy security, support affordability and prove once again what being an energy superpower looks like," Mr. Hodgson said. The Sunrise expansion project is forecast to provide employment for about 2,500 workers during construction and produce economic spinoffs for local communities and Indigenous groups. The pipeline expansion project could be in service by late 2028 and will use Canadian-made steel.
