The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that Alberta and Saskatchewan strongly opposed suggestions of Ottawa applying export levies on natural resources like oil and potash in response to new U.S. tariffs, highlighting growing divisions among Canadian leaders on how to respond to the trade war. The Globe's triple-bylined item led by Carrie Tait says Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe supported Ottawa's dollar-for-dollar countertariff strategy but opposed using key provincial industries in the battle against the United States. Alberta and Saskatchewan on Wednesday drew red lines around their natural resources, dismissing arguments that they should be used as weapons in the trade dispute. "What we, as a province, cannot and will not support is any kind of export tariff on our natural resources," Mr. Moe said. Ms. Smith said Canada would only be harming itself should it impose export tariffs on oil. Ms. Smith said: "I cannot think of a more disastrous policy decision than cutting off or taxing Alberta's oil to the United States. Doing so would absolutely devastate the Canadian economy." Mr. Carney has previously expressed reluctance to apply export taxes to Canadian oil.
