The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that Enbridge chief executive officer Greg Ebel, 62, is retiring at the end of 2026 after four years in the role.
The Globe's Jeffrey Jones writes that Mr. Ebel will be succeeded by Michele Harradence, currently the executive vice-president and president of gas distribution and storage.
Mr. Ebel was CEO of Spectra Energy, the U.S. gas distributor Enbridge acquired for $37-billion (Canadian) in 2017. When the deal closed, he became Enbridge's chairman.
As CEO, he oversaw the expansion of operations in the United States. That included a $9.4-billion (U.S.) takeover of three natural gas utilities from Dominion Energy in 2023, which diversified Enbridge's sources of revenue. It is now expanding oil shipping capacity to U.S. markets and its Canadian natural gas network.
All told, current and potential projects under consideration represent $41-billion (Canadian) in capital spending.
By July, Enbridge shares were up nearly 50 per cent from the time Mr. Ebel took the helm, though they have since drifted lower. Chairman Steve Williams says Mr. Ebel "leaves behind an enduring legacy and a company that is stronger, more diversified and better positioned for the future."
