Globe says Entourage accused of violating labour laws

2026-07-08 07:25 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday, July 8, edition that former employees of Entourage Health are accusing the company of violating labour laws by not providing severance pay after a mass layoff of 53 workers before it filed for bankruptcy protection. The Globe's Vanmala Subramiam writes that more than 40 former full-time workers filed complaints with the province's Ministry of Labour in June, stating they were laid off with no notice and not offered severance pay. Entourage's termination letter dated June 8 states that employees were immediately terminated and received a lump-sum payment of two weeks' pay instead of notice. It also notes that due to financial constraints, the company would be limited in making significant cash outlays, including severance pay. Most of the employees had worked at Entourage for at least five years. Ontario's Employment Standards Act entitles employees with at least five years at a company with a payroll of $2.5-million or more to severance pay of one week's wages per year of service, capped at 26 weeks. If a company lays off over 50 workers from one location in four weeks, it must give eight weeks' notice or pay in lieu, as it's deemed a mass termination.
