The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday edition that the new federal budget allocates $1.7-billion to attract international talent. The Globe's guest columnist Peter Singer writes that this investment aims to bring over 1,000 international researchers to the country. The budget describes Canada's productivity as "persistently weak," noting that if it had kept pace with the U.S. from 2017 to 2023, a median family income with one child would be nearly $11,000 higher. Without addressing this trend, our children may face lower incomes and risks to our sovereignty. The government has made a good start on infrastructure with the first five "major nation-building projects." The budget includes tax measures and R&D investments in AI, climate and defence, but better targeting is needed to recruit successful international scientists. The talent strategy could guide the supports needed to retain companies in Canada. Large firms like Alphabet's Google (AI), Novo Nordisk (GLP-1 drugs) and Pfizer (mRNA vaccines) often capture the economic benefits of innovations. Canada's system supports early-stage research well but drops off when projects need to scale. The budget offers ways to reinforce Canada's culture of innovation.
