The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that the federal and provincial governments are using artificial intelligence to analyze laws and identify outdated regulations to reduce red tape. A Canadian Press dispatch to The Globe reports that Treasury Board president Shafqat Ali and other ministers met in Toronto to discuss simplifying regulations to lower costs and enhance productivity. Mohammad Kamal, a spokesman for Mr. Ali's office, noted that several provinces are exploring the use of AI to streamline applications, review processes and enhance service delivery. He said the federal government uses BizPal, a platform that displays permit and licensing requirements and simplifies legal language using AI. The Ontario government is using AI to identify outdated laws and regulations. Federal, provincial and territorial ministers will meet again in the fall. In September, the federal government identified nearly 500 ways to streamline regulations and cut costs following the 60-day review. Examples included a Canada Border Services Agency proposal to end the rule requiring that travellers arriving in Canada on their way to another country be examined by the agency before making their way to their departing flight.
