The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday edition that the United States government's mandate requiring Anthropic to restrict foreign access to its artificial intelligence models highlights the risks Canada and other nations face without alternatives to American tech giants, experts say. The Globe's Joe Castaldo writes that Anthropic announced that the U.S. government has issued an export control directive suspending access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models for all foreign nationals, including company employees, due to national security concerns. Anthropic said the matter is a "misunderstanding" and that it is working to resolve the issue. But until then, it has cut off access to these models for all customers, including American users, to ensure compliance. Canada and Europe have expressed concerns about overreliance on U.S. tech companies, particularly due to the tense relationship under President Donald Trump. Control over AI and the computer chips powering these applications gives the U.S. the potential to restrict access and exert leverage over other nations. Prime Minister Mark Carney said U.S. restrictions on Anthropic's new AI models highlight the risks of relying heavily on a few American providers.
