The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security (CCCS) warns that agentic artificial intelligence is amplifying cyberthreats, as a Chinese state-aligned hacker employed it to automate attacks on numerous organizations globally. The Globe's Alexandra Posadzki writes that the CCCS said Monday that recent activity by a threat actor called Storm-0940 offers an early look at how AI is "reshaping cyber operations." The activity made use of agentic AI -- an AI system that can make decisions and use external tools with limited human supervision or instruction. Microsoft said that since as early as September, Storm-0940 has been using an agentic penetration testing system called ARTEX to automate attacks, some of which have resulted in an organization's cloud infrastructure being compromised. In some cases, it took under three hours, Microsoft said. Penetration testing, or pen testing, is when a cybersecurity expert seeks out and exploits system vulnerabilities for defensive purposes. Microsoft said agents can operate 24/7, including weekends and holidays, and pursue multiple breach paths at once, significantly reducing the time from target selection to objective achievement.
