The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that Cleveland Fed president Beth Hammack recently joined others calling for interest rate hikes to combat persistent inflation, setting the stage for a heated discussion and potential dissents at the upcoming Fed meeting under chairman Kevin Warsh. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe reports that Ms. Hammack said, "For the first time in my tenure, I'm hearing from businesses who say they think we need to take action to curb inflation, and from consumers who can't make ends meet about a growing sense of despair." She said: "Inflation is too high. The labour market is right around my level of maximum employment." Ms. Hammack said underlying inflation, as measured by the core personal consumption expenditures price index, probably rose 3.3 per cent in June. Fed policy-makers expressed concerns about rising fuel prices due to the Middle East conflict and inflation from the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence data centres. On Thursday, Dallas Fed president Lorie Logan, who joined Ms. Hammack in dissenting at April's meeting, told a group in Houston that the situation requires "modestly higher interest rates."
