The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, Sept. 24, edition that analysts say the 1-per-cent rate President Donald Trump keeps demanding from the Federal Reserve is impractical and would likely backfire. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe reports that a policy rate cut that low could trigger major disruptions in the global financial system, leading to higher borrowing costs for the U.S. government in bond markets. Some figures close to the President suggest his interest-rate demands are more about deflecting from high consumer prices than actual policy, especially with midterm elections approaching. But in practical terms, a 3-percentage-point cut by the Fed "seems cataclysmic," said J. Benson Durham, founder of DASM investment research firm. Treasury rates would climb as investors priced higher inflation, countries such as Germany could soak up capital by offering just a bit more to lenders than the U.S., and the dollar would "plummet," he said. Yet despite the bond market math and concerns about Fed credibility, Mr. Trump has repeatedly called for ultralow borrowing costs, which he says the U.S. deserves as the world's largest economy with, he argues, the safest credit.
