Globe says Umios to buy High Liner Foods for $800M

2026-10-27 09:15 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that High Liner Foods soared to record highs on Monday after Japanese seafood giant Umios offered more than $800-million in cash to buy the Nova Scotia company. The Globe's Jameson Berkow writes that Thornridge Holdings, the private investment company for Nova Scotia's Hennigar family, which is High Liner's largest shareholder with a 41.4-per-cent interest, has agreed to support the deal. However, the sale requires support from at least 75 per cent of votes at a shareholder meeting set for December in order to proceed. Umios is offering $27 a share. High Liner shares closed on Monday at $26.76, up $11.68, just below the Umios offer price. The offer includes a commitment to maintain High Liner's work force of more than 1,200 people, as well as the company's Halifax headquarters. High Liner has three production facilities, one in Nova Scotia and two in the United States, in New Hampshire and Virginia. Roughly 75 per cent of High Liner's revenue comes from its United States operations. "For the people at High Liner, really not much is going to change," said High Liner chief executive officer Paul Jewer. He will be staying with the company once the transaction closes.
