The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday edition that U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen received cheers in Canada for rebuking White House officials, particularly Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, who criticized Canadian liquor stores for not selling American products and making derogatory remarks. The Globe's Campbell Clark writes that the real issue, however, lies in the insults themselves. "They won't do it [sell U.S. liquor] because of the insults from this President and comments like yours," Ms. Shaheen retorted. U.S. President Donald Trump's remark about Canada being the 51st state sparked public outcry, leading to actions like the liquor snub. However, the real issue in Canada-U.S. relations goes beyond trash talk. The concern lies not just with tariffs but with a President whose intent appears to harm Canada, targeting its auto assembly plants and offering U.S. steel producers a way to evade tariffs by relocating to the U.S. Mr. Trump reneged on the 2018 trade deal and is now demanding concessions from Canada before discussing a review, with little objection from the U.S. political system. Ms. Shaheen is one of the few U.S. lawmakers who regularly defends the Canada-U.S. relationship.
