The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, July 7, edition that Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc and Canada's chief trade negotiator Janice Charette met with United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on Thursday, extending a scheduled 30-minute talk to an hour and a half. The Globe's Adrian Morrow writes that Mr. LeBlanc, when asked about reaching a deal by Aug. 19, said, "I hope so." He said he had a "constructive and detailed" discussion with Mr. Greer. He said, "Our focus has been and will continue to be on striking a comprehensive deal that addresses sectoral tariffs." Republican Senator Kevin Cramer said the talks have become more serious since President Donald Trump rolled out another suite of tariffs last month. "It's easy to see that something's happening, that there's some movement taking place" in the negotiations, Mr. Cramer said. "It's pretty clear to me that the leaders of the two countries have given the green light to a much more engaging and substantive discussion." Mr. Cramer praised Prime Minister Mark Carney's work on the file. "He's handled it very well. He stands up for Canada's sovereignty but does it respectfully. I think he's balancing his politics pretty carefully."
