The National Post reports in it Tuesday, Aug. 18, edition that Prime Minister Mark Carney plans to speak with President Donald Trump as Canada prepares for a 50-per-cent tariff on $29-billion worth of goods. The Post's Jordan Gowling writes that on Monday Mr. Carney described the negotiations as intense and delicate but did not specify what a good deal for Canada would be. Mr. Carney assured reporters that his government has a plan for every scenario and emphasized that it's not the time for public discussions about negotiations. He said, "We'll have opportunities over the next 48 hours to discuss in more detail as the negotiations go forward." Canada-United States Trade Minister Dominic Leblanc and Chief Trade Negotiator Janice Charette remained in Washington over the weekend, meeting with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer for a fifth time on Sunday. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick's department is responsible for the sectoral tariffs on metals, autos and forest products. Sources say the U.S. and Canada remain "very far apart" on a deal. Canada is seeking relief on Section 232 tariffs on Canadian lumber, autos, steel and aluminum.
