The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that the trade deal being negotiated in Washington this week would reduce President Donald Trump's tariffs on Canadian autos from 25 per cent to 15 per cent while keeping an exemption for American content. A triple-bylined item led by Adrian Morrow says that it would not, however, allow Canadian and Mexican content in vehicles to be tariff-free, as Ottawa had sought. Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew is critical of the deal because of its concessions. Quebec Premier Christine Frechette hinted she might not assist in closing the deal by returning United States alcohol to stores. Vice-President JD Vance mocked Mr. Carney's "climb down" at a private fundraiser. Canada sought exemption for all North American content from U.S. tariffs, but the U.S. insisted on only U.S. content being exempt. The U.S. demand has prevailed, complicated by parallel talks with Mexico, its auto industry is closely linked to the U.S. and Canada. Washington urged Ottawa to finalize its F-35 fighter jet purchase from Lockheed Martin, buy American military hardware for the Golden Dome missile defence system, grant the U.S. first refusal on critical minerals and boost oil exports to the U.S.
