The National Post reports in its Tuesday edition that there was a time when a Republican administration generally supported free markets over government control. The Post's J.D. Tuccille writes that President Donald Trump's populism, however, shifted the party's stance, leading to a government that demands partial ownership of large businesses and ties deals to federal involvement. Some Trump-era policies resemble those of socialist Senator Bernie Sanders. Last month, Mr. Trump claimed it was his "Great Honor" to announce that the U.S. now owns 10 per cent of Intel, valued at about $11-billion (U.S.), with no payment made for the shares. A Wall Street Journal report revealed that Mr. Trump's 10-per-cent interest in Intel partly resulted from his demand for Lipbu Tan to resign as Intel chief due to his China ties. Mr. Sanders now supports Mr. Trump's plan to take a 10-per-cent interest in Intel. George Mason University law professor Ilya Somin comments on the meeting of minds between Mr. Trump and Mr. Sanders, citing the Intel deal as an example of the similarities between right-wing nationalist and left-wing socialist policies, both of which favour extensive government control and even ownership of industry.
