The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that the Liberal government is auditing Canada Health Infoway following the failure of its $300-million PrescribeIT program. The Globe's Chris Hannay writes that PrescribeIT saw thousands of pharmacies sign up to its program, including Loblaw-owned Shoppers Drug Mart, Metro and Walmart. Infoway launched PrescribeIT in 2017 to replace fax machines with digital prescriptions. However, it was shut down last month in most of the country due to fewer than 5 per cent of prescriptions using the service. On Thursday, Health Minister Marjorie Michel's office announced a multiphase review of Infoway, which has received over $2-billion in federal funding since its 2001 founding. The first phase of the review will assess Canada Health Infoway's compliance with the terms and conditions of its contribution agreement, then a wider strategic review over the coming months will look at areas such as program delivery, effectiveness and compensation practices. Infoway was expected to lead implementation of a new law to make health records more accessible once Bill S-5 passes the House of Commons. Telus Health was the main technology vendor for PrescribeIT.
