The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday, June 15, edition that Industry Minister Melanie Joly will meet with four Chinese companies interested in building electric vehicles in Canada during her visit to China this week, aiming to attract investment in the auto sector. The Globe's Steven Chase writes that the four companies -- BYD, Chery, Geely and Shanghai Launch Automotive Technology -- have been mulling possible investments in Canada, Ms. Joly said. She wants to see Canadian companies engaged in contract manufacturing for Chinese EV makers in Canadian factories or plants. She noted that a subsidiary of Magna International is doing this for China's Xpeng in Austria. The Carney government is taking steps to support the Canadian auto industry amid uncertainty due to U.S. trade policies. However, this move may further strain relations with the U.S. during sensitive negotiations for the renewal of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. Ms. Joly said her mandate is to protect employment in the Canadian auto sector, which includes about 500,000 jobs in auto parts, assembly, logistics, automation, professional services, and specialized equipment for vehicle manufacturing and maintenance.
