FP says Linamar executive chair's fortune doubles

2026-08-18 07:19 ET - In the News

The Financial Post reports in it Tuesday, Aug. 18, edition that when President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on the Canadian auto industry, Linda Hasenfratz lost her billionaire status. The Post's Paula Tran writes that the executive chair's wealth largely comes from Linamar, a company founded by her father. Following the initial tariff announcement, Linamar's stock fell, reducing her net worth to about $800-million (U.S.). Linamar shares have rebounded to near record highs, boosting Ms. Hasenfratz s net worth to $1.8-billion (U.S). This shift may indicate a limit to Mr. Trump's trade actions on Canada and a potential path forward for the country's challenged manufacturers. Ms. Hassenfratz says: "Tariffs are very much a short-term problem. The vast majority of our business, there's absolutely no tariff. Key to Linamar's success over the last year has been that auto parts are exempt from the 25-per-cent tariff applied to assembled vehicles, so long as the parts are compliant with the existing trade deal between the U.S., Canada and Mexico. That means products that account for more than 60 per cent of Linamar s earnings are sold tariff free. The existing trade deal remains in place for another 10 years.
