The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that the federal minister in charge of U.S. talks, Dominic LeBlanc, hinted at a possible easing of the trade war, indicating Canada is open to new negotiations after receiving clarifications from his American counterpart, Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. The Globe's Bill Curry and Mark Rendell write that Mr. LeBlanc's optimistic view of a "mutually beneficial" trade deal was undermined by President Donald Trump's announcement to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America, shortly after negotiations collapsed. Mr. LeBlanc was responding to comments made a day earlier by Mr. Greer, who said that while the American side raised concerns about Canadian policies that urge on-line streaming companies to promote French programming, it did not insist on changes. Mr. LeBlanc welcomed the U.S. withdrawal on "discoverability and labelling," confirming that measures to promote French language and Canadian culture won't face future U.S. trade actions. Mr. LeBlanc said, "We look forward to further constructive U.S. clarifications on their other positions, which would create the possibility of a mutually beneficial trade agreement that respects Canadian sovereignty."
