The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday edition that Danielle Smith got exactly what she wanted when Ottawa named veteran energy executive Dawn Farrell as the first chief executive officer of the country's Major Projects Office, based in Calgary. The Globe's Andrew Willis writes that for months, Alberta's Premier has been calling on Prime Minister Mark Carney to turn words into action on oil and gas infrastructure investments. In Ms. Farrell, she scored an ally, a fellow Albertan who has served as the Premier's adviser and got tough jobs done as CEO of TransAlta and the much-maligned Trans Mountain pipeline. In energy circles, there are widespread expectations that the list will include the $16.5-billion Alberta carbon-capture and storage (CCS) project championed by the Pathways Alliance, a consortium of six oil sands producers. There are also widespread expectations that the list will be missing any reference to a new oil pipeline that would carry Alberta crude to ports on the B.C. coast. Numerous pipeline operators, including TC Energy, are pushing for additional natural-gas links from Alberta and Saskatchewan to deep-water export terminals, but no private-sector player is pounding the table for another oil pipeline.
