The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday edition that Federal Environment Minister Julie Dabrusin did not provide a specific timeline for removing Canada's cap on oil-and-gas emissions but said the government is working urgently to fulfill conditions outlined in the recent federal budget. The Globe's Tu Thani Ha writes that Ms. Dabrusin and Energy Minister Tim Hodgson promoted the Climate Competitiveness Strategy, which reflects a shift from former prime minister Justin Trudeau's green commitments. The budget indicates a cap may no longer be needed if pollution is reduced through updated carbon markets, regulations on methane emissions and carbon-capture technologies. Ms. Dabrusin said, "The oil and gas cap, if all of those pieces are met, would not be needed any more." She added: "We absolutely need to continue to work with urgency and it's an imperative. ... That is the way that I'm approaching it, that our government is approaching it." Mr. Hodgson said that Ottawa wants to be "clarifying our regulations to reduce emissions, so the private sector can spend more time building good projects and less time navigating bureaucracy." The government also wants to amend the "greenwashing" provisions in the Competition Act.
