The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that the tech industry's urgent warnings about the potential harm of artificial intelligence are clashing with political inaction in Washington, testing the government's ability to address a key issue of the era. An Associated Press dispatch to The Globe reports that President Donald Trump is leading the opposition to recent calls by tech leaders seeking greater government oversight. The President dismissed efforts to limit the technology on Monday as a "conspiracy." Other Republicans, including Vice-President JD Vance, have been cautious, while House Speaker Mike Johnson has mostly deferred to the White House. Democrats, meanwhile, are pressing for a more robust response, convening in private on Tuesday in the House to discuss AI. The contrasting responses highlight a significant disconnect between the tech sector's warnings about AI's existential threats and a federal government struggling with partisanship and election-year pressures. Partnership for Public Service's Max Stier says: "The signals we're receiving from our political leaders are not representing an understanding of the crisis that I think we are in fact in. Delay is going to prove very costly."
