The Financial Post reports in its Friday edition that Meta is taking no chances that Mark Zuckerberg ends up living far away from the company he co-founded. A Bloomberg dispatch to the Post reports that Meta is giving Mr. Zuckerberg non-voting shares to help cover a multibillion-dollar tax bill, allowing him to sell them without losing control of the company, after he warned a proposed California wealth tax might make him leave the state. In return, Mr. Zuckerberg has committed to staying in California -- or wherever Meta keeps its headquarters -- for the next eight years while he remains a full-time leader. Critics argue that the proposed five percent levy, set for a November vote, could drive away the state's wealthiest residents. Meta's deal offers a striking counterpoint: Rather than watch Mr. Zuckerberg leave, the company created a financial incentive for him to stay. A special committee charged with negotiating the agreement said having Mr. Zuckerberg work from the company's headquarters was "critically important," particularly as the intensifying race over artificial intelligence has him collaborating closely with Meta Superintelligence Labs. Bloomberg says Mr. Zuckerberg is worth $247-billion (U.S.).
