The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, July 18, edition that Frank Stronach has been granted a mistrial on his sexual assault conviction, leaving the billionaire businessman to face a single remaining conviction out of a dozen initial charges. A Canadian Press dispatch to The Globe reports that Mr. Stronach was found guilty last month of sexual assault and indecent assault related to allegations from two women. A judge granted a mistrial on the sexual assault conviction after e-mails from the woman s lawyer, related to a separate civil complaint, were presented in court, according to Mr. Stronach's lawyer, Leora Shemesh. She alleged those e-mails told a story inconsistent with the woman's testimony in the criminal trial. She called the decision to declare a mistrial after a conviction "incredibly rare." The court did not hear from the woman before the mistrial was declared, Ms. Shemesh said. The Ministry of the Attorney-General confirmed the mistrial. Mr. Stronach faced a dozen charges related to allegations from the late 1970s to the 1990s involving seven complainants. His trial began in February, and by April, prosecutors had withdrawn one charge and agreed to a not guilty finding on four others.
